Gear: What to bring for the seaweed foraging walk?
We will be traversing the intertidal zone, a rugged environment involving water, mud, and rocks. Proper gear is essential for your safety.
|
• Footwear: Rubber boots with a profile are highly recommended. Alternatively, sturdy hiking boots with ankle support (that can get wet/muddy) are acceptable. Note: Sneakers, flip-flops, or open sandals are not permitted due to slippery and sharp rocks. • Sun Protection At the coast, we will find no shade and when the sun comes out, you need to protect yourself. I recommend applying sunscreen before the walk, wearing a hat and sunglasses. • Clothing: The weather changes rapidly. Please dress in layers and bring a wind/waterproof jacket. I recommend bringing a 2nd pair of clothes and leaving them in the car or in the workshop (just in case you fall in the water). Staying hydrated: Please bring a water bottle with you to stay hydrated and wash some fresh seaweed before tasting. • Tools: Please bring a pair of scissors and a small bucket or cloth bag to collect your harvest. |
Who is the seaweed foraging walk for?
This experience is designed for adults and nature enthusiasts who are comfortable walking on the coast.
- Physical Ability: You should be competent at walking approximately 2–3 km on uneven surfaces (including sand and wet, slippery rocks).
- Age Recommendation: The content covers specific identification techniques and safety guidelines, which are best suited for adults and teenagers.
- Families: Looking for a beach experience with younger children? Check out my Custom Experiences for a private “Junior Safari” tailored specifically to kids.
Dogs: You can bring along your dog during the off season at your own responsibility. During the high season in July and August, dogs are usually not allowed at the beaches and can risk a fine.

Health & Dietary Safety
We work with potent, natural ingredients. Please note:
- Iodine: Seaweed is naturally rich in iodine. If you have a thyroid condition or iodine allergy, please consult your doctor prior to the workshop.
- Allergens: All recipes prepared are 100% vegetarian. However, as seaweed is a wild product, traces of crustaceans/shellfish may be present.
- Intolerances: Please inform me at the time of booking regarding any dietary requirements (e.g., Gluten-free) so I can adjust the recipes.
Who is this cooking introduction for?
Designed for food lovers, home cooks, and the health-conscious.
- Skill Level: No professional chef skills needed. We focus on accessible, everyday techniques. Most of the introduction includes me presenting and cooking, so don’t worry.
- Age: Due to the use of kitchen knives and the theoretical focus, this is best suited for adults and teenagers (12+).
- Families: Younger children may find the theory sections long. For a fun, hands-on tasting experience for kids, please check my Private Family Experiences.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do you go ahead if it’s raining? Yes. This is an outdoor adventure! We only cancel in the event of severe weather warnings (storms/lightning). In that case, you will be offered a refund or an alternative date.
- How do I pay for the experiences? Either before or after the tour or workshop, ideally in cash. I can send you a receipt by email.
- Can I eat the seaweed? Absolutely. We will focus on identifying edible species that you can harvest and take home. I will teach you the sustainable cutting techniques to ensure the ecosystem remains healthy. I will also bring some snacks if fresh seaweed is not your thing.
- Do I need to like fish? Not at all. Many seaweeds have nutty, smoky, or savory (Umami) flavors rather than “fishy” ones.
- Can I buy seaweed products there? Yes. Since we are at the seaweed producer’s premises, you will have the opportunity to purchase dried seaweed, tartares, or cosmetics.
- Local Purchases: I do not get a commission on purchases you make at the workshop venue; these sales support the local producer directly.
- Online Orders: If you wish to order products later from home (e.g., via German webshops recommended in my follow-up email), I may act as an affiliate partner and earn a small commission to support my work.
- Do you send out information beforehand about the course? Yes. I send details to the workshop participants a few days beforehand, reminding everyone of what to bring, what to wear, the exact meeting point, and the weather forecast.
- Do you give out notes after the course? No print outs. I do follow up with an email listing the seaweeds we covered, along with additional recipes, information, and links.
- What happens if I need to cancel? 5.1 For Individual Participants (Public Tours)
- Up to 48 hours before the event, 95% is refunded in case of a cancellation. The remaining amount is covering expenses from the payment provider.
- Less than 48 hours or “No Show”: 100% of the fee is charged
